Lore:

The Jorogumo: A yokai born from the golden orb-weaver spider, the Jorogumo emerges when one of these arachnids reaches 400 years of age. Upon this milestone, the creature sheds its mortal form and transforms into a monstrous, human-sized being with magical powers. Known for their mastery of illusion, Jorogumo can shapeshift—most often into a beautiful young man or woman—using charm and deception to lure prey into their web, where they feast upon the victim’s essence.Origins: Under a Crimson Moon, deep within a sacred grove hidden in the ancient forest surrounding Mount Rokkon, a golden orb-weaver shed its final skin and was reborn. But this Jorogumo was unlike the others—for he was male, a rarity among a species known almost entirely for its daughters. As sentience bloomed behind his crimson eyes, he turned to the others. There was intelligence in his gaze… and something more. A darkness—primordial and potent—etched into his soul by the Blood Moon under which he was born. The Brood Mother stepped forward, her many eyes studying the strange new heir. In a voice both silk and steel, she posed a single question: "What is your name, my child?" The answer came like a whisper through the web: "Syaoran."The Spider Lily: From the beginning, Syaoran displayed a chilling affinity for the Dark Arts. The Brood Mother, recognizing his potential, welcomed him as her protégé and passed down her knowledge of witchcraft. Under her tutelage, he learned to weave hexes and craft poisons with a precision that unsettled even the eldest of the brood. His skill—and the quiet ruthlessness behind it—earned him a name among yokai: 'The Spider Lily'. Like the crimson flower he was named for, he was beautiful, venomous, and a harbinger of death.

The Tengu, red-faced and long-nosed demons of the yokai family, are natural predators of the Jorogumo. These powerful beings are revered as kami, spirits tasked with guarding the mountains and forests by the local Hingashi people. As Syaoran’s brood thrived, rumors began to spread—too many travelers had gone missing near the sacred Spider Grove. Hearing the desperate prayers of the villagers below, a Tengu descended from its lofty perch atop Mount Rokkon, intent on purging the blight and restoring balance to the land. Syaoran’s brood resisted. Fiercely. But despite their cunning and strength, their efforts were in vain. The grove burned, their home lost. One by one, the spider-kin scattered into the deep forest… yet the Tengu pursued them still.Syaoran fled. Deeper and deeper into the forest’s shadowed heart he ran, his breath ragged, the hiss of leaves and snapping branches close behind. Fear clung to him like silk spun too tight. Behind him, the rhythmic thwump-thwump of great wings echoed through the trees—the Tengu was close. Just as the last sliver of hope began to fade, the forest opened to reveal a structure half-swallowed by mist and ivy: an old manor, weathered by time yet untouched by ruin. It stood tall and silent, its wooden eaves and stone columns whispering of a bygone era. Graceful, regal… but wrong. An aura surrounded it—ancient and oppressive. The scent of old incense hung in the air, mingling with something fouler… older. Syaoran hesitated. Every instinct screamed at him to run. But the wings beat louder now—closer. With no other choice, the young yokai stepped across the threshold. The manor accepted him.

Ten no Ji—a Hingan manor lost to the vestiges of time. The rot of halcyon days feasted upon the carcass of this once-glorious Eastern estate. Its beauty, faded. Its walls, warped. Within its ancient halls, a mysterious force resides—starving, slashing out, desperate to fill the void gnawing at its center. It is unthinking, motionless… and yet ever-present.The manor drifts, fluttering from place to place like a spirit unmoored. Once-ordinary doorways now serve as ravenous mouths, swallowing unsuspecting wanderers into the depths of its ancient bowels.Syaoran's world twisted the moment he crossed the threshold. Up became down. Left spiraled into right. And then—stillness. The sweet aroma of eastern incense drifted around him, comforting and strange. Coughing, crawling, he rose to his feet… only to find himself face to face with a curious sight.A small fox-boy stood there, head tilted in puzzlement. His eyes held no threat, but the way he watched Syaoran—silent, still—unsettled the Spider. He spoke in a strange, clumsy tongue and acted the fool… but behind that mask, Syaoran sensed something hidden. A quiet cunning. The kind that lingered behind mirrors and smiled when no one was looking. He called himself Galley. He was kind. Unreasonably so. He treated Syaoran as though he belonged in the manor, like he was already apart of their auspicious family. And though the Spider could not explain why, he felt a strange pull—an unspoken debt not just to the fox… but to the house itself.A contract was forged. Syaoran would remain within Ten no Ji, tending to the guests who stumbled, fated or foolish, through its haunted doors. He would serve. Wait. Gather power... Until the day came when he could return... Return… and destroy the creature that had brought ruin to his life...To his home... To his brood.

Hooks:

Below is a list of possible points of interest that your character and mine might share.
Any hooks marked with a (*) are rarer and circumstantial that will require OOC communication and/or time for the plot to develop.

The Anomaly

  1. Marked by the Dark, his ebon skin, crimson eyes, and other demonic looking features set him apart — a being that clearly walks the edge of shadow and mystery.

  2. There’s a sweetness in the air around him, subtle and alluring — a scent that pulls you closer. His gaze, dark and mysterious, seem to peer straight through you, and his voice carries with it an ethereal cadence, like a forgotten melody riding the wind.

  3. To those attuned to aether, his presence is unlike any other — a primordial force cloaked in a deep crimson hue, pulsing with a strange, ancient power.

Common Trade

  1. Gifted from birth with a knack for the Dark Arts, Syaoran shows a natural aptitude for Witchcraft. Perhaps you’d be willing to trade spells and secrets with a curious Yokai?

  2. Touched by foresight, Syaoran can often be found seeking glimpses of what has yet to pass. His fascination with divination only deepens with time — from runes to readings, he’s eager to explore every form. Might you share your own methods with him?

  3. A novice harpist, Syaoran finds peace in the soft, melodic notes he plucks. If you play, he’ll listen. And if you're willing, perhaps you could teach this gentle Spider a new song or two.

Familiar Face

  1. As a Jorogumo — or simply as a fellow yokai — you may feel an innate sense of kinship in his presence. There’s a strange ease about him, as if your spirits already recognize one another.

  2. *Something about him stirs a memory… a face from a distant Brood, a whisper from the past. Perhaps you were once part of the same web — or maybe you simply think you’ve seen him before.

World Traveler

  1. A resident of Ten no Ji — a mysterious, ever-shifting manor said to open its doors to venues and taverns across the world (and sometimes beyond) — Syaoran may just step through a portal into your favorite haunt. Don’t be surprised if the curious Spider shows up where you least expect him.

  2. New to the wider world, Syaoran's eyes are full of wonder. Eorzea’s cities, cultures, and curiosities all beckon him — and he’s more than eager to explore them at your side.
